Scalnyx and CEA joint collaboration partnership

30 April 2021

Scalnyx and CEA are joining forces to deliver an industrial “secure by design” solution to accelerate the execution of data processing applications meeting the most stringent confidentiality requirements. Dubbed Scaltrust, this new integrated solution combines CEA-List’s homomorphic encryption technologies with Scalnyx’s high-performance software acceleration.

The surge in attacks on personal data highlights the vulnerability of internet-connected infrastructures. The most affected sectors are healthcare, retail, public bodies, and insurance and finance. At a time when many organisations are turning to the outsourcing of private data storage and analysis to remote servers, the question arises: how can the confidentiality of data be guaranteed — from collection through to processing, including by remote third parties — while complying with current regulations governing the management of such data?

Homomorphic encryption addresses data confidentiality challenges. Since data is handled exclusively in encrypted form, the results of operations are accessible only to the person holding the decryption key. To this end, CEA-List developed the Cingulata technology, which enables the creation, optimisation, and deployment of processing applications on encrypted data hosted on remote servers, while preserving end-to-end confidentiality. Thanks to this technology, it is already possible to address a broad range of applications where an instant response is not required, particularly in healthcare, energy, anti-counterfeiting, and the factory of the future.

Although computational optimisations are carried out in the code generated by Cingulata, the deployment of processing workloads on computing resources remains a major challenge in achieving optimal performance. To address this, Scalnyx combined Cingulata with its software acceleration technology, Scalgo, pairing machine learning algorithms with an ultra-lightweight and scalable execution model.

Resulting from this combination, the new Scaltrust solution facilitates the deployment of application code and enables better use of available computing resources. The benefits of this solution include reducing both energy consumption and application response time, thereby lowering the cost of cloud usage. This opens up the use of homomorphic encryption for confidential data analysis in the cloud to new application domains such as finance and insurance, healthcare, defence, and manufacturing.

The first joint demonstrator, which will be built on applications in the finance sector, is planned for the end of the year. The cooperation between Scalnyx and CEA is supported by the European BOOSTER project funded by EIT Manufacturing, and by BPIFrance through the Bourse French Tech Emergence grant for innovative startups, following Scalnyx’s Deeptech labelling.
